How it Works: State Competition
All women participating in the Miss New York Organization must take part in the Miss New York State competition. Your job is not to win, but to represent yourself to the best of your ability. Each woman will compete in the following categories:
Private Interview
Individual 10-minute interview with our panel of judges. There are typically 5 to 7 judges on a panel. Contestants are questioned on their background, educational and career goals, opinions on current events, social issues and pop culture, and their interests, hobbies and extracurricular activities. Contestants are judged on communication skills, the ability to convey her opinion, personality and confidence. (25% total score)
The Scoop: From college to career, interviewing to express why you are a worthy candidate for a position is a skill every woman should sharpen. We're looking to see how capable you are of communicating about yourself, since communication is a major part of the job of Miss New York.
Talent
A 90-second routine of your own choosing. From vocal performance to ventriloquism, any solo act that demonstrates your ability to captivate an audience. Judges will look for a combination of skill, excitement and entertainment value. (30% total score)
The Scoop: Artistic ability takes discipline and dedication. Both skills are vital to any woman's professional life. Performance also lets us see your ability to express yourself in a heightened form. Expression and communication are key skills for any Miss New York.
Lifestyle & Fitness in Swimwear
Miss America began as a swimsuit contest on the Atlantic City Board Walk. Today, we use this phase of competition to evaluate your physical health and confidence. (10% total score)
The Scoop: There's nothing scarier than walking in a bikini and stilettos in front of a crowd. We're looking for women who have the discipline and dedication to master their body, but also the ability to handle a high stress situation with energy and fearlessness.
Evening Wear
Briefly model a formal gown of your choosing. Contestants are judged on their sense of style, elegance, and the overall sense of joy they bring to their beauty. (15% total score)
The Scoop: Just like any professional, Miss New York will be representing her entire organization every time she steps out. Show us you have good taste and can select style that brings out your best attributes. Then, make us forget the dress as we become captivated by the woman wearing it.
On-Stage Question
Contestants will be asked to answer a brief question relating to current events, the organization, or herself. Communication skills and comfort under pressure are evaluated. (20% total score)
The Scoop: Successful people are always hounded by the press. Slip ups can cost companies millions. Show us you can be a strong representative of yourself and our program during unexpected situations.
